Cosmetic Dentistry Braces
Dental braces, also known as orthodontic braces, are used to align teeth. They are used to correct underbites, overbites, cross bites, open bites, crooked teeth and various flaws of the teeth and jaw. They can be cosmetic or structural and are usually used in conjunction with orthodontic appliances to widen the palate or jaws or to shape the teeth and jaws. Braces are usually used on children and teens, but adult braces are not unheard of.
Braces work by the use of force. The archwire pushes the tooth in a certain direction. This can cause bone remodeling. A tooth usually moves about a millimeter per month, but there is high variability.
There is a wide variety of types of braces. Traditional braces are stainless steel, sometimes a combination of nickel and titanium.
Ceramic braces are less visible. They blend in more with the natural color of the teeth, and some people think that they are more visually appealing. However, they are typically more brittle, and easier to break, so they are made thicker to resist breaking.
Gold-plated stainless steel braces are for people who are allergic to nickel, but may be chosen to better blend with teeth. Some people also prefer the look of gold over traditional silver.
Lingual braces are fitted behind the teeth, and are not visual to casual interaction. They are more difficult to adjust to since they get in the way of the tongue. They are only offered by dentists who are trained in them, also.
Clear braces or retainers, or Invisalign, gradually move the teeth into position. They have the same affect as traditional braces, but can be removed for eating. However, they are not used in complex orthodontic cases. These invisible braces are used so that they are not noticed during interaction.
