Cosmetic Dentistry Crowns
Crowns are materials that are cemented into place. They can be used as a cap or completely cover a tooth.
Dental crowns are used in many cases. One is when the first signs of decay appear, or a 'cavity'. The filling that they use is a crown or intracoronal restoration. When the tooth decays a lot, they shape a crown around the remaining tooth which is called extracoronal restoration.
Dental implants also require crowns or bridges as well at root canals. A surveyed crown may be placed when the tooth is intended at an abutment tooth for a removable partial denture. Crowns can also be used in aesthetics when veneers/laminates are not an option.
Full coverage crows can alter the size, shape and shade of a patients tooth while protecting it. Porcelain crowns can be just as expensive per tooth as veneers, but may be the only option if a tooth is decayed. There are also gold crowns, ceramic crowns, porcelain fused to gold, all ceramic crowns, CEREC which is made of all porcelain, and a temporary crown.
To prepare for a crown, the dentist removes a significant amount of the tooth structure, which is irreversible. More than one visit is usually required to complete the crown or bridgework.
