Cosmetic Dentistry Implants

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root replacement.  It is used to resemble a tooth, or a group of teeth.  There are several types of dental implants, and the major classifications are divided into osseointergrated implants and fibrointegrated implants.  The most widely used is the osseointegrated implant, where titanium is fused into bone and osteoblasts grow on and into the surface of the implanted titanium.  This procedure has a success rate of about 95%.

A typical cosmetic dentistry implant consists of a titanium screw that resembles a tooth root, with roughened surface.  The procedure is outpatient and is preformed under anesthesia if there are several that need to be placed, but can be done with a local anesthetic if the procure is simple.

In more complicated procedures the gum is cut to expose the jawbone, which can take an hour or longer, and the screw is placed.  Healing can take three to six months, so the dentist uses the implants to anchor crowns or a bridge so that normal chewing can go on.
In simple procedures, the surgeon removes a small plug of the gum where they will drill, and the site is drilled and the implant is installed.  The crown is then added.     After several months, the implant is uncovered and a healing abutment and temporary crown is placed onto the implant.  This encourages the gum to grow into the right scalloped shape where the natural tooth will go.  Once this is done, a permanent crown is placed over the implant.
