Cosmetic Dentistry Veneers

A dental veneer is made of  a thin layer of restorative material placed over a tooth’s surface.  There are two main types of material used for this which make up composite veneers and  porcelain veneers.  Porcelain veneers resist stains, so the stay whiter than your regular teeth.

Dentil veneers were invented in California by a dentist named Charles Pincus.  They fell off after a short time and were used to temporally change the appearance of movie actors’/actress’s teeth.  Simonsen and Calamia found a way to permanently hold porcelain veneers to the surface of a tooth with acid and composite resins,  in 1982.  Today, there have been improved cements and bonding agents, and typically last 10-30 years.

A porcelain veneer is used mainly to improve the appearance of teeth and give the person a smile makeover.  Some veneers take minimal tooth preparation (drilling) or none at all.  However, the veneers that do not require drilling are placed directly on the tooth and can appear bulky or too large.

One brand of porcelain veneers is Lumineer by Cerinate.  They offer a painless way to apply veneers without grinding or shaving.  They are contact lens-thin and are place over existing teeth.  The good thing about using Lumineers is that it is completely reversible since your natural tooth structure is not harmed.  It usually takes 2-3 visits to the dentist to complete, but you can have you perfect smile! © 2009 cosmetic-dental.biz | Contact Us
